With the start of a new year, we thought it only fitting to start a new blog series! Throughout the year we’ll be highlighting some inspirational creatives and businesses in the wedding and event industry whose work and products we admire. If you’re on the hunt for top notch vendors for your wedding, bridal shower, or really any party, don’t pass up Instagram as a huge resource for finding your perfect fit. You’ll find photographers, florists, dress designers, rental companies, and design studios from across the country and most likely right in your home city. Searching hashtags like wedding, weddinginspiration, milwaukee, mkebrides, and eventdesign should give you a good start to your search. We also love that most vendors give you a little peek inside their life which can give you so much insight into who they truly are beyond their carefully curated portfolio. We’ve connected with many vendors through Instagram and now have the pleasure of calling some of them our friends IRL (in real life)!
For our premiere installment we chose to feature the stunning work of Milwaukee based fine art photographer, Kate Weinstein. The passion and dedication she puts towards her craft is unparalleled and shines through in every moment she captures. Her images are what wedding dreams are made of and put her in high demand with even the most discerning brides. We are privileged to call her our friend and are excited to work with her on a preppy east coast wedding this summer that is sure to be a stunner!
Read on to learn a bit more about Kate, the root of her passion for photography, and to see so many more images that will have you swooning! You might just find she’d be the perfect fit for your wedding day.
Can you tell us a little bit about why you got started in photography?
For as long as I can remember I’ve loved taking photos and documenting life. In college photography classes I learned on all manual film cameras and developed my film by hand in a darkroom. For a while I had dreams of opening my own photography studio, but coming from a small town, all I had ever been exposed to were senior portrait photographers and I felt like I needed a little more adventure in my life first before “settling down” with a studio. So after college I moved out to DC and worked on Capitol Hill for about five years, where I did find adventure for a while, but then realized I needed to be doing a job I really loved. So I moved back to the Midwest for grad school, where I met my dear husband, who encouraged me to follow my artistic passions, got married, and then opened my photography business.
Hands down my favorite thing in the world to photograph is a wedding day. Its the most beautiful day. The flowers, the pretty dresses, the shoes — yes I love all of that too — but most of all I love what’s happening on the wedding day. You have the bride and groom — deeply in love and surrounded by the people who love them the most — who are together making that most sacred commitment to each other. There is so much joy and excitement in the day. Marriage is such a blessing, and I love that I give my clients photographs that they can look back at and remember their wedding day and remember their vows. I take my job very seriously. I hope my photos serve to strengthen marriages over the years.
Do you have a favorite location in Milwaukee to shoot weddings?
This is a hard question because there are so many good ones. I love the Villa Terrace, the Farm at Dover, Milwaukee University Club, Pfister Hotel, the Pritzlaff, the Milwaukee Art Museum, backyard/private estate weddings….and any wedding that Mint & Lovely is working on! I feel like Milwaukee in general is often underrated. Its a really cool city and a super cool place to get married and to live.
Describe your photography style in just a few words.
Timeless, natural, romantic, artful.
What is one of your favorite images you have taken recently?
Really hard question! This changes on the daily. This one is from a wedding this past year. The candid moments are my favorites.
What is one thing you would like every bride and groom to know before their wedding?
The day goes by quickly make sure you have good photos to remember it by… And marriage is awesome!
Other than photography, what are your other passions/hobbies?
Travel, reading, art museums and art history, old film cameras.
